signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus

The advent of diabetes mellitus is generally very subtle. The symptoms don’t show until the damage has already begun. It all begins when the pancreas is not able to produce sufficient amount of a hormone called insulin and at times it does not produce it at all. It all sounds and seems very simple but if left unattended the affects of it are profound and extremely disturbing. It can happen to any age group so it knows no confinement.

Diabetes mellitus has been around for ages and continues to make its presence felt. Though it is serious in nature, timely detection and treatment plays a major role in the control and prevention of the disease. Initially, detection is very unnerving but one must overcome emotions and allow self motivation to take over. Like I mentioned earlier, the symptoms or signs are subtle and inconspicuous and one should be alert.

High levels of blood sugar present in the bloodstream cause confusion in the body. Sugar needs to be converted into energy which the body uses for various purposes. Diabetes can be identified by the following symptoms; frequent urination as a result of high blood sugar level, increased thirst and hunger, visible weight loss or weight gain, poor skin healing, sores or wounds that do not heal in a hurry, urinary tract infections, blurred vision, dry itchy skin, tingling, burning or numb sensation in the hands and feet, erectile dysfunctions, recurring infections in the bladder or vagina, tiredness, drowsiness, bed wetting, muscle aches and cramps and fatigue.

A few other symptoms include nausea, sweet-smelling fruity breath, vomiting, rapid pulse, abdominal pain (usually in children), and breathing difficulty. Dehydration is also another sign; a potential diabetic may also suffer from athlete’s foot. Women may experience unusual vaginal dryness, premature menopause or the absence of periods. Headaches and acne is persistent among a potential diabetic. The concerned individual may have recurring infections. The high levels of glucose can lead to lethargy or diabetic coma.

Diabetes is divided into three main categories namely Type 1 (Juvenile diabetes), Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes (prevalent in women during pregnancy). Normally patients with Type 2 diabetes symptoms are not even aware that they have diabetes. Type 1 Diabetics show the above signs and symptoms. Gestational diabetes is detected in women during their pregnancies. Diabetes mellitus very secretly begins a gradual break down of the human anatomy by attacking the vital organs. When there is a sign of anything that works contradictory to what your body is designed for then its only common sense that you go see a doctor.

Sheer neglect of these symptoms will lead to heart disease, kidney disease, blindness or irrevocable nerve damage. In many instances severe damage is done to the feet as well. Gangrene sets in and amputations are inevitable. All this happens due to malfunction of the pancreas and the incapability of the hormone it produces and that is insulin. Taking note of all this and acting accordingly and promptly is the path one needs to take. Working closely with the doctor along with steely confidence and discipline will cause you to reap the benefits of a long, healthy and fruitful existence.

All the very best!!
