Being alert to the signs of high blood glucose to avoid complications.

Diabetics around the world often suffer from high blood glucose levels and may feel that it is normal to have these high levels. If you have been feeling a little ill and have a family history of diabetes you may find it useful to get your blood sugar level checked from a doctor. It is very important for you to be aware of the signs of high blood glucose levels as it would help you to avoid future complications.

High blood glucose also known as hyperglycemia it is a condition in which level of blood sugar is elevated and stays elevated for a longer period. It may be caused due to several different reasons; most common being a lack of control on diet, emotional stress, or extra physical stress. Sometimes some illnesses can also cause high blood sugar level. If you are leading a sedentary life then that can be another cause. The symptoms may be very mild and may develop at a slow pace. If you are suffering from Type1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes, you should ensure that you test your blood sugar regularly with a good blood glucose analyzer.

The major signs include a continual tingling sensation in your extremities; some even describe it like a heart beat in the hands. Another signs is the blurring or misting of vision with a tingling sensation around the eyelids. This is because the high level of sugar flowing in the body is literally finding its way everywhere. You may also find it very irritating to have that sticky feeling on your teeth no matter how much you clean them. Some of the other symptoms may be headaches and difficulty in concentrating on the work at hand. Some of you may also experience unexplained weight loss. With the immunity weakened due to the high blood glucose, you are unable to defend against infections. You may become vulnerable to influenza and bladder and vaginal infections.

If you have signs of mildly high blood sugar, you may experience increase in thirst and urination especially during night time. You may also have increased feeling of warm and dry skin. If your glucose levels are moderately high you may notice signs like dizziness or weakness when you are standing or sitting, gradual blurring of vision and dark, concentrated urine but in decreasing amounts. When you have severely high levels you can experience rapid heart beats with a weak pulse, increased weakness, drowsiness and may even suffer loss of consciousness. If your blood sugar levels remain high, at about 250 mg/dL you may become dehydrated and are at a risk of a life threatening condition called as hyperosmolar state or diabetic ketoacidosis. If it is diabetic ketoacidosis you may also notice a fruity breath odor, loss of appetite, belly pain and vomiting as well as rapid, and deep breathing. These are medical emergencies that require urgent treatment.

Diabetics should ensure that they keep a regular check on the glucose levels and work with a dietitian to keep their diet in control. You cannot ignore the tell tale signs of high glucose levels and should immediately seek medical treatment to bring it down. Regular exercise is immensely helpful.

Be aware and alert to the signs of high blood glucose and ensure a healthier life.
