type II diabetes in children

Diabetes, alarming numbers of children across the globe are falling prey to this dreadful disease. Diabetes type I is generally detected children with a family history of diabetes, however, type II is something we never thought will catch up so fast. Cases of children with type II diabetes has stepped up causing a lot of difficulties and trauma to small children and their families. It is a chronic condition, especially observed in obese, over weight children and teens. The geographical location, dietary habits, activity levels and genetics play an important role in children developing type II diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that causes significant rise of sugar level in the blood. As the body is not able to convert the food into insulin, the sugar level rises as it is not able to reach the cells. In type II diabetes the body is able to produce Insulin but fails to respond to it. Type II diabetes is also called as “non Insulin dependant diabetes” and it is affecting numerous children and teens. Type II diabetes is also caused due to hereditary factors.

Along with hereditary factors children are also affected by type II diabetes due to lack of nutritional diets and lack of exercise. Today’s teens and children prefer junk and fried foods and enjoy watching television more than playing outdoors. Lack of vigorous physical activity makes children obese and overweight. According to research a majority of children suffering from type II diabetes are obese and overweight.

The extra amount of fats present in the body makes it difficult for the insulin to act and being inactive simply adds to the problem. Initially it was believed that type II diabetes occurred only in overweight adults, however it’s been noticed in children these days as lifestyle and dietary habits of children have changed dramatically. As per studies it has been found that children who reach puberty are more than likely to get affected by diabetes due to the hormonal changes occurring in the body.

Type II is fast occurring in children as it shows no signs or very few symptoms. However, signs like frequent urination, feeling of tiredness, and excessive thirst, can be an early indication of type II diabetes. However, not all children experiencing these symptoms may be suffering from diabetes. Doctors say that few children and teens develop a thick and dark skin around the neck, armpits, between the toes, elbows and knees, which should be taken as an early sign of type II diabetes.

Children suffering from diabetes type II are also at a high risk of high blood pressure and abnormal levels of cholesterol. If you see any of the above signs in your child, it is time you took him/her to the doctor and get a blood test done.

If you learn that your child is suffering from type II diabetes you have to get serious about his/her diet, lifestyle and habits. Keeping a control over the amount and type of foods and following an exercise regimen will help your child fight diabetes and lead a healthy life.
