Planning of diets for real (renal) and diabetic patients is little bit complicated. Because in this situation you have to choose the food which does not affect the glucose level as well as sodium, phosphorus and potassium level in the blood.
In diabetes human body does not produce sufficient insulin or cannot use insulin. Insulin is a hormone which converts starch, sugar and other food content into energy. When it does not work properly, glucose level goes up and this is called diabetes. Diabetes which occurs due to low sugar threshold in the kidneys is called renal diabetes. In diabetes treatment, diet plays an important role.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney diseases. If you have diabetes, avoid foods that contain excess sugar. While planning diets for a real (renal) diabetic patient always remember that salt and salt substitutes contains potassium chloride so avoid or limit the use of salt substitutes. Also limit high protein foods. We get proteins from milk products like yogurt, milk, ice-cream etc.
In renal diabetic diet you can include fruits (which are low in potassium), vegetables, regular margarines and mayonnaise. In this diet you should be careful about low and high potassium foods. Low potassium fruits are apples, grapefruit, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, tangerines, peaches and pears. You can also include fruit juices in your regular meal. Vegetables like chili pepper, lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, eggplant, cabbage, beans, peas, celery etc. are good for diabetes and should be included in the diet.
A renal diabetic dietary chart provides more details about healthy food.
