Diabetes diets and meal plans with low carb and high protei (protein) means you should include high-protein foods and restrict carbohydrate-rich foods. High-protein foods are meat and eggs and carbohydrate-rich foods are pasta, potatoes, certain fruits and vegetables. A Low-carb diet restricts carbohydrate consumption which is usually for weight control and it is also helpful for diabetes treatment.
In low carb diet high carbohydrate foods are limited and replaced with the high-proteins and low-carb foods. Low carb diet is not only useful for diabetes but it is useful for cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic syndrome, and weight control. The basic thing of low-carb diet plan is eating less of the foods that contain simple carbohydrates like processed flour and sugar and eating more fresh fruits, whole grains, vegetables and foods which are good sources of proteins.
Restricting carbohydrates means not eating less carbohydrates but it means eating right amount of carbohydrates. Our body requires sufficient amount of carbohydrates because if the body doesn’t receive sufficient carbohydrate, it breaks down muscle and other tissue to produce glucose. A waste product called ‘ketones’ gets built up due to this. It is common in people who have insulin-dependent diabetes. Ketones make the blood acidic. This is called as ketosis and it is serious problem for diabetic people, pregnant women and unborn babies.
Carbohydrates are of two types, simple and complex carbohydrates. Both are source of energy, but simple carbohydrates are bad for health. These simple carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels. Sugar, honey and foods made from sugar or honey are simple carbohydrates. On the other hands complex carbohydrates are good for digestion. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are good sources of complex carbohydrates. Since carbohydrates are main source of energy, you cannot avoid carbohydrates fully from your diet.
People choose high protein low carb diet, but high protein diet can cause many health problems. High protein diets raise the risk of developing high cholesterol, heart disease, kidney stones and cancer. These problems occur because of the avoidance of carbohydrate containing foods. If you cannot include enough carbohydrates in your diet you cannot get vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and the fiber that they contain. Our body not only needs proteins but other nutrients as well in balanced amount. The high protein diet also causes excess excretion of calcium through the urine than normal. This increases a risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis.
The American Diabetes Association does not recommend high protein diet for weight loss. Our body needs all the nutrients and this diet restricts some essential nutrients.
A person with this type of diet does not get enough vitamins and minerals and this results in many health problems. This diet can cause quick loss in weight because of restricting the amount of carbohydrates but it also causes a loss of body fluids.
A healthy diet which includes a variety of foods and all required nutrients helps people to control diabetes and other health problems. So before starting any diet talk to your doctor and then decide the right diet for you.
