low blood sugar and the atkins diet go hand in hand

Atkins diet first appeared on the scene in 1972 with the publication of a book written by a New York City cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins. Atkins diet soon became a rage and gained followers all over the world. The Atkins diet emphasizes that individuals eat foods high in protein and avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates. According to Dr. Atkins when carbohydrates are eliminated from the diet the body goes into a metabolic state called as ketosis. During the process of ketosis the body burns fat at a faster rate than the normal which results in quicker weight loss.

Diabetes and hypoglycemia can both be controlled by low carbohydrate diets such as Atkins and the South Beach diet. The additional benefit of such diets is significant weight loss. Sugar is stored as fat by the body and once you reduce carbohydrate intake the body is starved of sugar, which is required for providing energy, the body then commences to consume stored fat for its energy needs thus reducing blood sugar levels and causing weight loss.

The Atkins diet comprises of four separate phases: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and maintenance. The induction period comprises of a two-week period and you are allowed not more than twenty grams of carbohydrates per day. During this phase you rapidly loose weight. In the ongoing weight loss phase you are allowed up to sixty grams of carbohydrates and you still continue to loose weight although a bit slowly. This particular phase has to be followed till you lose an additional five to ten pounds of fat. Thereafter, you move to pre-maintenance phase which lasts approximately for two or three months or till such time you have reached the target weight. The fourth and the final phase of the Atkins diet is called the maintenance phase and is so designed to help you to maintain your ideal weight. During maintenance you are allowed to eat a certain amount of carbohydrates but not like before. The Atkins diet has thousands of devout followers and it is so designed that you feel free of cravings. It has proved to be an effective way to lose unwanted pounds.

Low blood sugar level is one of the side effects of diabetes medications this happens due to aggressive insulin treatment whereby the blood glucose levels are pushed far down. Maintaining a steady blood glucose level is not an exact science, since blood sugar levels depend on when meals are taken and what foods are included.
