Atkins diet first appeared on the scene in 1972 with the publication of a book written by a New York City cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins. Atkins diet soon became a rage and gained followers all over the world. The Atkins diet emphasizes that individuals eat foods high in protein and avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates. According to Dr. Atkins when carbohydrates are eliminated from the diet the body goes into a metabolic state called as ketosis. This particular phase has to be followed till you lose an additional five to ten pounds of fat. Thereafter, you move to pre-maintenance phase which lasts approximately for two or three months or till such time you have reached the target weight. The fourth and the final phase of the Atkins diet is called the maintenance phase and is so designed to help you to maintain your ideal weight. During maintenance you are allowed to eat a certain amount of carbohydrates but not like before. The Atkins diet has thousands of devout followers and it is so designed that you feel free of cravings. It has proved to be an effective way to lose unwanted pounds.
